Henry L. Benning letter, 1858.

The collection consists of a two page ALS dated February 1, 1858, with original envelope to his wife as justice of the Georgia Supreme Court. Benning was a delegate to the secession convention in Charleston, as well as Georgia, served under Hood and paroled at Appomattox, C. H. April 9.

Henry Lewis Benning was born in Columbia County, Georgia, the son of Pleasant Moon Benning and Malinda Meriwether White, planters. In 1834 he graduated with honors from the University of Georgia, Athens. Soon afterward he moved to Columbus, where he was admitted to the bar.
